Description
These diphthong books are a great way for students to practice reading and sounding out diphthongs: au, aw, ew, oi, oo, ou, ow, and oy. These small interactive books work perfect at centers or as an individual activity.
Words included:
Au- author, launch, sauce, pause, autumn, haunt
Aw- crawl, draw, straw, yawn, hawk, bawl
Ew-blew, chew, grew, screw, view, brew
Oi- boil, foil, hoist, oil, point, voice
Oo- book, cook, hood, hook, look, wood
Oo-cool, loop, moon, scoop, stool, tool
Ou- bounce, couch, count, mouse, south, sprout
Ow- clown, crowd, gown, growl, owl, allow
Oy- cowboy, joy, toy, oyster, coy, boy
Interactive Book:
The first three pages I make into an interactive book. I laminate these pages after I cut them apart. You will have 12 pages when you cut them apart. I only make about 4-5 copies, so students can work on them at a center. I keep overhead markers set out at the center. This saves on paper and they can be reused. I hole-punch the top left corner and put them on a binder ring. You can also print one book for each student and have a parent volunteer help put them together.
Students will:
• say the word (or tap each letter and sound it out)
• trace the word
• color it
• write the word neatly
• match the picture to the word
• graph the number of letters in each word
• circle the diphthongs
• write a sentence using some of the diphthong words
• draw a picture (practice following directions)
Short Diphthong Book
The last page in each set I print a copy for each student to make into a book for their book bag. They can read it on their own once we have gone over it, and it gives them practice reading diphthongs. They can color the books as well. I did provide a color copy of the book as well as black and white.
I hope your students enjoy these diphthong books!
