I understand that one of the things we as teachers want most is for our students to be able to use language correctly when they write or speak. In order to do this, students need a simple understanding of the basic rules of grammar usage.
With my ninth-grade students coming to me from several different middle schools and teachers, I couldn’t always rely on them having the tools that they needed to understand what I was marking for correction on their papers. It was nearly impossible to ask them to properly use the grammar rules without a clear understanding of what those rules are. After several frustrating years of struggling with convoluted explanations that helped no one, my fellow freshmen instructors and I decided to implement some short mini lessons of direct grammar instruction, reviewing grammar and mechanics in our classes.
These mini lessons only take about 10-15 minutes of your class time daily (great bellringers), but they help give students tools that they will use for the rest of their lives. There is also a 20-25 item multiple choice quiz at the end of each unit.
I generally recommend starting with Part 1, the eight parts of speech, and continue through the units in order as the best and most thorough way to review grammar skills. However, if you feel your students already have a solid grasp on most grammar concepts, you can easily just select the individual units in which you believe your students need the most help.
If you use one lesson a day plus the quiz in this unit, Part 8: Punctuation, these should last nine days and cover the following skills: 16 comma rules, colons and semicolons, quotation marks and underlining, hyphens and apostrophes, and parentheses and dashes
