Description

The "Deep Dive Discussion Protocol" is an activity that allows students to practice accountable talk and inquiry of a text. Students work in small groups and use task cards to contribute to a group discussion. Students receive four task cards, (1) ask a question card, (1) answer a question card, (2) make a statement card. This helps to guide the conversation. Once students master the protocol, students will more easily discuss a complex text and other stimuli.

What's included:

  • Student handout with four task cards and student directions
  • Student reference sheet with question and statement stems
  • Teacher's Guide with directions

How does this resource work:

  1. Assign discussion groups.
  2. Provide students with a prompt. The prompt may be based on a reading, visual, video, or another stimulus.
  3. After students review the stimulus, distribute a set of task cards to each student. Each set includes: one (1)  Ask a question task card, one (1) Answer a question task card, and two (2) Make a statement task card. You can cut them out beforehand, or print a handout for each student and have them cut out the cards themselves.
  4. Instruct students to engage in conversation about the assigned prompt.
  5. Students need to place a task card into the middle of the table each time they speak.  For example, if a student asks a question about the stimulus they place the corresponding task card into the middle of the table.
  6. Students are required to use all four cards during the discussion.

Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 11–12 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas.
Propel conversations by posing and responding to questions that probe reasoning and evidence; ensure a hearing for a full range of positions on a topic or issue; clarify, verify, or challenge ideas and conclusions; and promote divergent and creative perspectives.
