Description

4th Grade Measurement and Geometry Project! Project Based Learning! Measurement Conversion, Angle Measurement, Area/Perimeter, Parallel/Perpendicular Line Identification, Line Plots, Angle Classification and more! Digital version included! Google Slides version included!

Your students always want to know when they are going to use math in the real world! They also love dreaming about what they will be when they grow up! This project is a great combination of these two ideas! Students get to choose a career path and see how that job uses measurement and geometry in the real world!

This project is perfect for fourth grade students working on measurement and geometry application skills. It includes single step and multi-step problems. It also shows measurement/geometry in a variety of different contexts and includes measurement conversion, area/perimeter, line plots, angle measure and additive angle measure, classifying shapes based on presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines and angle types, as well as symmetry. It works great as an end-of-unit project for fourth grade for beginning-of-unit review project for fifth grade!

In this project, students choose the job that sounds most interesting to them and then they complete the project on the pages designated for that career choice. The career choices include server, firefighter, small business owner and photographer.

Each job includes 7 pages of fun and engaging measurement/geometry application practice. A description of the 7 pages is listed below:

  • One page of story problems of possible measurement/geometry situations for that job
  • A one-page extended story problem task
  • A two-page math task about a scenario someone with that job might encounter
  • A two-page math task where the student is put into the role of that job
  • A fun page where students get to take ownership of the career choice and create/design something related to their job choice

This project works great for independent practice, small groups, a distance learning project, an end-of-unit project, an early finisher option and more! At the end you can have a “career fair” where students can showcase their work in that particular career!

This project is differentiated and includes two versions so students at all levels of measurement/geometry application practice can be engaged in this purposeful practice! See the standard-alignment guide for in each section of the project below. Level One has one notebook at the bottom of the page and Level Two has two notebooks at the bottom of the page. All levels are aligned to standards 4.MD.A.2, 4.MD.A.3, 4.MD.B.4, 4.MD.C.5, 4.MD.C.7, 4.G.A.1, 4.G.A.2 and 4.G.A.3

  • Level One: Mostly single-step measurement conversion, area/perimeter and angle measurement problems. Multiplication/division in problem solving up to two-digit by two-digit factors and one-digit divisors. Recognizing angles and lines of symmetry in more simple shapes.
  • Level Two: Two-step and multi-step measurement conversion, area/perimeter and angle measurement problems. Multiplication/division in problem solving up to three-digit by two-digit factors and two-digit divisors. Recognizing angles and lines of symmetry in more complex shapes.

This is AWESOME! I love being able to show students how the skills we use and learn in school can serve them in the future. This activity helps students see that they need math in the real world, not just in the classroom, while helping them review key 4th grade skills and content.

Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.
