Description

You are the boss of Ms. Terra Cotta Tile Company and your students are your designers. You assign each student one of 24 clients and your designers need to make draft designs, order samples from the warehouse, and create the final design and bid. This activity goes beyond figuring out area based on squares, to real life situations using a tile project. My students love this activity.

12/20: Now updated to include a distance learning version for PowerPoint or Google. The Preview Video shows how it works online.

How can I use this product?

It can be used as a week (or more) long whole class activity. Each day has a slide to show what the goal and procedure is for each day.

Day 1 - Show students examples of tile projects and have students practice designing two samples using the virtual tools (dragging color squares onto a grid) and then count how many tiles they used

Day 2 - Assign students one of each of the 24 clients from patio floors, backsplashes, to shower walls

Day 3 - Have students share their designs to other students to get feedback and have students make revisions

Day 4 - Students finalize their designs and create a bid and letter for their clients

Day 5 - Student find out from their client and share their final projects to the rest of the class

If you are looking for both the print and google version, click here.

What is included?

The PowerPoint (.PPTX) contains 127 slides

  • Cover/copyright info
  • Teacher instructions
  • Signs/schedules/class instructions
  • Sample tile projects to show your students ideas
  • 24 clients' portfolios with scaled drawing of different client tiling projects (like patios, back splashes, shower, garden walls, etc.) progressing from basic squares to more difficult projects. You can make copies if you have more than 24 students.
  • "Tile requisition form" for "designers" to request color tiles from the warehouse
  • "Bid and Final Thoughts" sheets for them to fill in prices for basic tiles, custom tiles, and labor

And a PowerPoint (PPTX) file that includes 127 slides, with similar contents as the print, only students interact online and move color squares to represent the tile.
