I left this activity for students to start with a substitute, but then gave them a few more class periods to work on it. I started by drawing interest using a video of a kid who had built his own tiny house. The kids really loved seeing him tour his house, and were excited for this project. They did really well overall. This was for an 8th grade "reteach" or intervention type classroom, so building foundational skills like operations with fractions and solving word problems is super important. This project did just that and also gave students the opportunity to see how math is used outside of school.

I tried using this resource during the early months of CoVID online schooling. I wasn't as successful as I had hoped to be, but do NOT blame this resource. I had some organizational and technological issues that prevented it being a success. I hope to give it a go again next term.

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘒/𝘣 + 𝘀/π˜₯ = (𝘒π˜₯ + 𝘣𝘀)/𝘣π˜₯.)
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
