Description

Students practice in graphing points, recording coordinates, identifying distances between points using a city map. You can also adjust the level of difficulty by choosing the coordinate plane that is right for your students!

My students had a lot of fun working in pairs on this activity!

There are two options:

Version 1 is more difficult. Students label key locations on the map and find artefacts on the city map using hints. Then they record their coordinates, determine the artefacts they have found and find distances between them.

* Three coordinate planes are included for you to choose the level of difficulty (with grid, partially erased grid and with no grid) to allow differentiation in the classroom.

Version 2 is the easy one. Students find the artefacts on the city map using the coordinates. Then find distances between them.

* This resource is for personal/one classroom use only, not for distributing or sharing online.

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand signs of numbers in ordered pairs as indicating locations in quadrants of the coordinate plane; recognize that when two ordered pairs differ only by signs, the locations of the points are related by reflections across one or both axes.
Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Include use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate.
