Description

The Distributive Property of Multiplication is probably the most challenging multiplication property to teach or learn! This animated and interactive PowerPoint teaches students to break down the Distributive Property of Multiplication into more comprehensible parts. Third-grade students or higher can follow along with the included printables to help them practice using this multiplication property. Meanwhile, the Distributive Ninjas will help along the way and make it fun and engaging!

This important multiplication property is introduced in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in the third grade. It is one of several multiplication properties that make problems easier to solve. The Distributive Property breaks down more complex math problems by distributing factors.

HOW IT WORKS

  • The PowerPoint Presentation is fully animated with sound.
  • Watch the Distributive Ninjas split apart an array with their Ninja Star. Sounds are included to keep the students engaged (sounds can be turned off by lowering the volume on your computer).
  • There are 4 problems to demonstrate how to distribute.
  • The first 2 are guided and the last 2 can be done independently or guided.
  • Students first are taught that an array can be split.
  • Then each smaller array can be solved by multiplying, then adding the 2 products to get the final product.

PRINTABLES

  • The Printables include 4 Practice Sheets to use along with the presentation so your students can practice.
  • Two additional practice sheets can be used for independent practice, homework, or an exit ticket.
  • Print the posters in color or black and white. A separate file includes instructions on printing large posters using Adobe Reader.
  • Use the bookmark to give to students as a study guide or resource.

THE PRESENTER'S NOTES

  • the Presenter's Notes include instructions for advancing animations and slides.
  • Includes Teaching Points and questions to ask on each slide.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

  • 19 Slide PowerPoint Presentation
  • 6 Printables
  • bookmark (color and black and white)
  • 1 Poster for the Distributive Property of Multiplication (color and black and white)
  • 1 Poster for steps to splitting up an array (color and black and white)
  • 4 Practice Sheets to use along with the presentation
  • Presenter’s Notes for Teacher

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Alisa D. says, "My students loved this resource. It was the easiest time I've ever had teaching them the distributive property. They were engaged the entire time. Thank you!"

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Jessica D. says, "I used this product with my 4th graders. It was much needed as they had gaps that needed to be filled in with the Distributive Property. They loved the sound effects of the slides and were very engaged. Thank you for making such an awesome resource. It was very easy to follow and teach from. I will definitely be returning for additional products!"

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. Examples: If 6 × 4 = 24 is known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property of multiplication.) 3 × 5 × 2 can be found by 3 × 5 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30, or by 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30. (Associative property of multiplication.) Knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.)
