Description

This is a PowerPoint that can be used as notes for instruction on how to divide fractions and whole numbers with the help of models as a visual aid. The presentation will first go over how to divide fractions using different methods. Students will be asked to solve straight forward division questions, along with real-world word problems. The sides will give students explanations, followed by the original model of each fraction, then the more detailed model which shows the quotient of the two fractions. This presentation includes vocabulary/review along with visual examples to be used as class notes or a scaffolded assignment. These notes are structured with a do now, title page (with lesson objective), followed by examples and real-world questions. This presentation also has a midway checkpoint to help students quickly self assess as they progress through the lesson. These notes align with the EnVisions Math textbook for topic 1, lesson 4 (Part 1) but can be used separately as well!

Once you have downloaded this product, you will be able to completely customize your presentation to fit your needs. Depending on your technology platform, the words shown in the thumbnails above do not look perfectly aligned, that is because I make everything in my google drive then export it to Power Point prior to uploading here. I can assure you, once downloaded this file, the words and slides are well structured and organized! (Although, you can customize to your liking anyway!)

Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For example, create a story context for (2/3) ÷ (3/4) and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient; use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that (2/3) ÷ (3/4) = 8/9 because 3/4 of 8/9 is 2/3. (In general, (𝘢/𝘣) ÷ (𝘤/𝘥) = 𝘢𝘥/𝘣𝘤.) How much chocolate will each person get if 3 people share 1/2 lb of chocolate equally? How many 3/4-cup servings are in 2/3 of a cup of yogurt? How wide is a rectangular strip of land with length 3/4 mi and area 1/2 square mi?
Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm.
Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
