Description

Are you starting a Number Theory unit? Or wanting a quick refresher of divisibility rules for students? This introductory lesson provides creative opportunities for discovery and investigation of divisibility rules. It helps scaffold students’ understanding of the divisibility tests (for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10) and provides a firm foundation for using them going forward.

**PLEASE NOTE** This is an optional lesson in my 2-week Number Theory unit. While this will easily work as a stand-alone lesson, if you like the style and content, you can purchase the full 6-lesson unit HERE.

CONTENTS

  • Detailed Teacher Lesson Plan: With learning objectives, notes on pre-lesson planning, step-by-step instructions for activities, and even suggestions for delivery.
  • Divisibility Rules Reference Sheet: An empty reference sheet for students to record the divisibility rules. There are two options provided for this exercise, with or without space for examples.
  • Using Divisibility Rules Worksheet: An engaging and creative exercise in which students apply their knowledge of divisibility rules.
  • Slideshow: Divisibility Quick Check - True or False: An attractive slideshow to help test students’ knowledge.

I used parts of this lesson with my 7th grade learning support students. We really liked the introduction, and using the deck of cards to discover if the number was divisible by 9. The students enjoyed voting if they thought it could be divided or not. I used a foldable notebook page with the divisibility rules and examples as a guided note page. The students who like coloring also enjoyed the coloring activity included too!
