This no-prep lesson packet is perfect for your division unit! It teaches students the basics of long division but keeps the numbers small and in their comfort zone. All the problems in this lesson have a 1-digit divisor, a 2-digit dividend, and a 2-digit quotient. This means the must complete the division cycle twice to complete each problem. An example of this would be 79 divided by 3. First students divide the 3 in the 7 and then the 3 in 19. The fact that each problem follows the same numeric pattern is intentional and helps kids memorize the steps and gain confidence to prepare them for larger numbers.
We all know that long division is one of the toughest math skills to teach. For many years it caused many meltdowns in my class-from the students and me, the teacher. What I finally realized was that when I broke division down into very narrow, specific lessons (i.e. 1 digit divisor, 2 digit dividend, 2 digit quotient), kids grew comfortable with the mechanics of division and when the numbers started to grow they knew just what to do.
This no-prep lesson packet has students practice division computationally and also in problem-solving settings. Each time students solve a word problem they are asked to draw a picture, solve the problem, and then answer in a complete sentence.
The lesson packet includes:
⇒Teacher-Lead Problem Set
⇒Partner Problem Set
⇒Three Pages of Independent Practice
⇒Challenge Page for Early Finishers
⇒Answer Keys for Everything
