Go beyond computational skills and give students practice with rigorous math tasks that will help prepare them for end of year assessments. Perfect for 3rd and 4th grade, or advanced 2nd graders, this division math journal includes 24 unique math prompts; half of the prompts are error analysis, with an incorrect solution provided, and your students’ job is to explain the error and explain how the problem should be correctly solved. The other 12 prompts are complex word problems; many comprised of a Part A and a Part B.
Division strategies and skills included in this math journal are:
• Multi-step equations
• Repeated subtraction
• Fact families
• Modeling with illustrations
• Reasoning and critique
Math journals work well with guided math, small group rotations, a challenge activity, and early finisher activity, as problem of the day, or a whole group exercise. They also lend themselves well to differentiation. Students who have mastered basic computation, but need more practice with explaining can focus on the error analysis prompts. Students who are not ready for a challenge yet can focus on the traditional word problem prompts.
