When assessing their oral knowledge of sight words. Highlight the ones they know and throughout the year repeat. You can also have it so the students can bring the checklist to you when they learn more words. Letting them take charge of their word journey.
When assessing their spelling of the sight words. Highlight the ones they know as they learn them. Have the students do the highlighting when they master the correct spelling. I do weekly words where they get 6 words to focus on each week. The ones they spell correct get highlighted on the checklist, the ones they struggle with remain unhighlighted and will be choose again later on. As students get more comfortable with the routine, I have them pick their own 6 words from the checklists.
It's a great visual for you and them to their growth!
You can even choose different colour highlighters to show what they mastered in each term, or month!
