Description
Build conceptual understanding of Double Digit Addition with Regrouping with these double digit Base Ten Blocks Activity Mats and Differentiated Worksheets! These engaging hands-on activities will allow students to physically model the regrouping of double digit numbers, showing them why and when to regroup.
Base 10 Blocks Activity Workmats
I use these Base 10 Blocks Activity Workmats as a teaching tool to promote conceptual understanding of addition with regrouping when I introduce the concept, and then as a math center for early finishers.
My students don't forget the steps to regroup because they understand the WHY behind the steps.
Students love to use the printable paper clip spinners or 10-sided dice to roll/spin the addends for each problem, making it into a game!
Choose between 3 versions of the activity workmats or use them all:
- Model with base 10 blocks manipulatives with step-by-step instructions printed on the page
- Model with base 10 blocks manipulatives without the steps printed - if you like a "cleaner" look
- Model by drawing - if you don't have base 10 blocks, or it is too cumbersome to hand them out every time!
Differentiated Worksheets
These double digit differentiated worksheets are ideal to use with your small groups to target individual student needs.
There are 4 levels to meet all of your students' needs:
- Level 1: No regrouping (for your struggling students who need more practice with basic addition and place value concepts)
- Level 2: Regrouping ones to tens ONLY
- Level 3: Regrouping ones to tens AND tens to hundreds
- Level 4: Mixed problems of types from levels 1 - 3
The worksheets build in complexity, so as students master one level, they can "level up" to the next worksheet! I like to have the students use their base 10 blocks manipulatives and workmats to model each problem from their worksheets.
Do your students need more help with mastering single digit addition? Then you might like these Make a 10 to Add Workmats and Worksheets.
