I wanted longer reading passages,  to build reading stamina in preparation for testing. So I created this resource for my students and added  review of the priority standards and supplemental practice in main idea,  summarizing,  inferencing,  context clues and word meaning along with  grammar and sentence structure. It is great as sub plans and for enrichment too.

I try to touch on every domain:

• Literature:  RL5.1,  RL5.2,  RL5.3,  RL5.4
• Foundations: RF5.4
• Speaking and listening:  SL5.4
• Language:  L5.1
• Writing Narrative:  W5.3

Key Features:

Text based writing response:  Just like you will find on many assessments,  students respond to a literary passage in their constructed responses,  as well as the writing prompt.

Standards mini lesson:  A quick explanation of the standard is provided in student-friendly language.

5-6 day lesson plan: includes page numbers and the standard being taught on that day.

Partner work:  several opportunities are offered for partner work.  During the second read,  for example, students read with a partner.  The paragraphs are numbered allowing students to take turns.  Partner work is also included in the venn diagram writing brainstorming activity.  Students share their ideas on the topic with a partner,  they record both their responses as well as those of their partner.  

Center/small group pages:  two center activities are provided that are great for English language learners to reinforce grammar  and sentence formation.  A cutting out activity with verbs in various tenses gives students the chance to expand their depth of speaking and writing with practice in using verb tenses. 

Three reads:

• First read is a teacher read-aloud.  The teacher models fluent reading and asks deeper level thinking questions provided with the passages.  This allows for building and exploring background knowledge.  

• The second read is a partner read,  with numbered paragraphs to allow for taking turns. Students support each other in reading multisyllabic words fluently.  

• The third read is independent reading.  After having had opportunities to practice reading students are usually ready to read on their own.  Students annotate and highlight on the third read,  after having pre-read the comprehension questions.
