Description

A reading comprehension packet just for ESL Newcomer students?! Yes please!

These readings are very carefully designed with simple sentence structure, present tense verbs, high frequency vocabulary words and pictures to support understanding. The readings become gradually more difficult so that you can challenge your learners and/or differentiate between students during a lesson. These are great confidence boosters for newcomer English Language Learners and I have used them repeatedly with great success!

Each reading has a true/false section to check comprehension. Some readings have a "defining new words" section and others have a short answer section.

Topics covered:

--School

--Family

--Pets

--Sports

--Subjects in school

These readings align to WIDA ELD Standard 1: Social and Instructional Language as well as Common Core Standards (tagged). I have tagged the Common Core standards on a grade 5 level to serve as a baseline for ELL reading comprehension in English, but of course these reading are flexible and can be used for a variety of grade levels (5-12).
