Description

Enhance your ESL teaching experience with these comprehensive progress monitoring forms. Effectively track your students' speaking, reading, and writing skills with ease. These user-friendly tools are designed to simplify the process, ensuring a seamless experience for both educators and learners.

These practical observation and assessment tools can be used alone or as a complementary resource to my collection of evaluation grids: ESL Assessment Grids and Scoring Rubrics (Speaking, Reading, Writing).

UPDATE 2020: I have included a second version of the competency development report forms (See version B). You can use this form if you prefer allotting scores while assessing students' performance.

⭐BEST USES:

  • You may use this resource as a formative assessment tool at the end of a unit, week, month, or throughout the semester.
  • Use it as an end-of-term/end-of-year evaluation form to establish students’ degree of development of the ESL competences/acquisition of skills from a holistic perspective.

⭐Ways of assessing learners' speaking, reading and writing skills using this resource:

A) Observation/tracking or conferencing tool

Use this form on a daily basis to track students’ improvement over time. At the end of the month, offer feedback on students’ performance during one-one one conferences.

B) Assessment tool to evaluate students’ performance at the end of the term or year:

Use this resource to establish students’ degree of development of the ESL competences/acquisition of skills based on the various activities students have completed during the term or year.

⭐What is included in the downloaded file?

  • C1 – Oral interaction Competency Development Report sheet to assess students’ performance during oral interaction/conversation activities carried out in class.
    • Final results scoring rubric: You can edit the scores if you have a different grading system than the one I have included.

  • C2 – Reinvests Understanding of Texts (Reading skills) Competency Development Report sheet sheet to assess students’ performance while carrying out tasks related to reading and listening activities.
    • Final results scoring rubric: You can edit the scores if you have a different grading system than the one I have included.

  • C3Writes and Produces Texts Competency Development Report sheet to assess students’ performance while carrying out various writing activities.
    • Final results scoring rubric: You can edit the scores if you have a different grading system than the one I have included.

HOW TO DETERMINE STUDENTS' GRADE/SCORE?

  • To determine students’ results, look at the observation sheet to see how often they demonstrated their ability to use a particular skill or how often they performed according to expectations on a specific task.

  • Version B - You only need to allot a score on a scale of 1 to 5 while observing students' performance. Then, you simply need to calculate students' overall grade.

This resource has been designed for Grade 9-12 ESL learners (upper-intermediate and advanced levels). However, it might be useful for ESL/ELA students below or above these grade levels. If you teach in Québec (CA), these Competency Development Reports are perfect for Grade 9-11 classes (Secondary 3, 4, 5 Core and EESL groups).

Please note that this resource has been designed for Grade 9-12 ESL learners; however, it may also be appropriate for ELA students below or above these grade levels.
