Description

Students won't have to ask, "When am I going to use this in real life?" In this activity, students will develop a Math skill worthy of real-world applications. They can use it immediately figuring discounts, sales taxes, tipping, proportions and more. This exploration is constructed to guide students on a journey to understand how to mentally calculate percentages with ease. Students will be able to analyze the patterns in each column recognizing how to calculate percentages mentally. If students are able to mentally calculate 50% 25%, 10%, and 1% of any number, then they can find any percentage based on iterations of any of those combinations. The activity is laid out with instructions, questions and ends with a summary takeaway for students to record their upgraded thinking. Math does not have to be all about logarithms. Here students are empowered to think differently. There is always more than one way to solve a problem. Who wouldn't want another tool in the Mathematician toolkit?
