Description
Students construct a scale model of the layers of the Earth. They use proportions to convert real world distances to map distances, then measure them out on a slice.
Included in this package:
- Student Worksheet (Anticipation Guide, Table for Calculations, and Reflection Piece)
- Teacher/Student Directions
- Templates of Slices
- Fully modifiable
This activity works grade with students of various skill levels and motivations. I've successfully completed it with 9-12th graders in inner city school. Can be adopted down to 6th grade level with guiding on the overhead or smart board

Cant wait to use it!
Great activity!!
Great activity for students to grasp the thickness of each layer! I used this with 11 and 12 graders in inclusion classes and worked great!
Great Resource for kids to collaborate!
Great activity, scaled it up for my classes, worked great, thanks!
This was a good review of proportions for lower level students, but I felt it was a bit simplistic for the 11th & 12th grade students in my class. However, it will be great for my repertoire of differentiated lessons!
I was wondering in your pictures one has pieces missing from period 4. Was there a reason for that?
