Description

This earth science unit is jam-packed with meaningful lessons that explore earthquakes, volcanoes, weathering and erosion, along with other constructive and destructive forces that make slow and fast changes to the Earth’s surface. This all-in-one resource has everything you need from science experiments to differentiated activities and worksheets to science centers!

Get your students actively involved when you start this fast and slow changes of the earth unit. Students will begin by exploring the layers of the earth then the fast and slow changes, along with the constructive and deconstructive forces that are at play, all causing changes to the Earth’s surface and creating Earth’s landforms. As students work through these concepts, they will pause to get a deeper look at volcanoes, earthquakes, and of course, weathering and erosion!

Save at least 20% off when you purchase the bundle!

What Concepts & Skills are Covered?

Printing Notes:

While I recommend printing in color and laminating materials for future use, it is not necessary. These materials print just fine in grayscale. I would suggest printing "as image" to avoid any potential issues. Additionally, download the resource to your computer, open it, and then print. Printing from your browser often creates problems.

The activities included in this are effective and have kept my students so engaged! In particular, the Earth's layers activity has helped my 5th graders understand exactly what they need, while also giving them more detailed information. The experiments included throughout are so fun as well!

NGSS2-ESS1-1
Use information from several sources to provide evidence that Earth events can occur quickly or slowly. Examples of events and timescales could include volcanic explosions and earthquakes, which happen quickly and erosion of rocks, which occurs slowly. Assessment does not include quantitative measurements of timescales.
NGSS2-ESS2-1
Compare multiple solutions designed to slow or prevent wind or water from changing the shape of the land. Examples of solutions could include different designs of dikes and windbreaks to hold back wind and water, and different designs for using shrubs, grass, and trees to hold back the land.
NGSS4-ESS3-2
Generate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of natural Earth processes on humans. Examples of solutions could include designing an earthquake resistant building and improving monitoring of volcanic activity. Assessment is limited to earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.
