Rock Cycle Group Poster Project

Student centered and collaborative! The rock cycle poster project is broken up into two parts to guide students through the collaborative process of creating a beautiful informational poster of the rock cycle. Rubric included for quick and easy grading.

Part 1 - Students form three groups before being assigned one of the three rock types. Students then collaborate with each other to become experts in their assigned rock type. Finally in part one, students create a colorful poster (handout) of their rock type which includes graphics and information on formation and rock types.

Part 2- Students then break from the rock type group to form a group of three; one student from each of the rock type groups. The jigsaw method is employed as students take turns teaching each other about their rock type. After students complete the jigsaw, they combine their posters and information to create a large rock cycle poster.

Standards -

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) changes the paradigm of how science is taught. NGSS employs three dimensions when examining scientific phenomena; scientific practices, core ideas and crosscutting concepts. This unit is fully aligned with NGSS and is designed with three distinct dimensions in place:

Scientific and Engineering Practices - Students will develop and use models as well as use mathematical and computational thinking.

Disciplinary core ideas - Product was carefully developed to Include both core ideas - Earth's Materials and Systems as well as Role of Water in Earth's Surface Processes.

Crosscutting Concepts - Unit is aligned with concepts of scale, proportion and quantity as well as systems and system models.

NGSS performance expectations for this unit –

5-ESS2-1 Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.

5-ESS2-2 Describe and graph the amounts of salt water and fresh water in various reservoirs to provide evidence about the distribution of water on Earth.

ELA/Literacy standards –

RI.5.1 - Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

RI.5.4 - Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 5 topic or subject area.
