This standards-based unit includes partitioning shapes and verbalizing halves, fourths, and quarters. It also has practice of what equal shares look like in shapes. Students must be able to draw and identify the decomposition of shapes. Are your students ready for the challenges of the 21st century? Problem-solving and critical thinking skills are at the very heart of getting our kids ready to navigate the world of today.

Teachers need to understand the ways in which students acquire the ability to partition shapes and identify the parts of those divisions. Developing this reasoning with decomposed shapes is critical for higher-level geometry.

Mega Math Practice 1.G.3 gives your students a lot of practice understanding the partitioning of shapes. Young mathematicians not only need to learn how to define the parts, but how to create divided shapes. This is how we encourage higher-order thinking in our young students.

Mega Math Practice can be used as independent practice for skills already taught, homework or for a class starter. These pages are NOT meant to be used until students need practice with skills that they have already been taught. They should also not take the place of using manipulatives. The use of manipulatives would also be helpful when using these practice pages. Students need many opportunities to work with shapes and their properties.

This unit is aligned with the First Grade Common Core Math Standard 1.G.3

Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and a quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares.

This unit includes practice with partitioning shapes based on the first-grade standards. I use these pages during our “written math practice” rotation during math workshop/guided math time. These pages can also be used for early finishers or homework during the time that you work with individuals and small groups. There will be more MEGA MATH PRACTICE units to come aligned with the Common Core State Standards.

I have used ‘guided math’ in my classroom for over ten years. I begin my teaching block teaching/spiraling math concepts as a whole group, but most of my math block is devoted to guided practice in small groups followed by independent or small group practice, centers and intervention. I begin my math time every day with a page from my “Number of the Day” series.

I hope that you and your kids enjoy this fun resource. Check out my store for lots of fun math units including my popular Number of the Day units for grades K-Second.
