The Goal of the Mystery
The primary objective of this activity is to encourage and enhance reading skills. Students will actively engage with the text by highlighting evidence to support their answers. The discovery process involves a fun "fill-in-the-missing-letter" format to unlock clues.

For differentiation, a B-Edition Structure is included, which requires students to provide full answers that the teacher must check. Word banks are also provided to simplify the word puzzles if needed.

To solve the mystery, students must read carefully to uncover missing letters in words, sentences, and statements, answer comprehension questions, and tackle vocabulary puzzles. Each clue challenges students to think critically and use deductive reasoning to eliminate suspects from their list. The last suspect standing? That’s the culprit!

The reading passages are part of an original story where your students take on the role of the hero detective.

Preparation Made Easy
This is a print-and-go activity! Everything you need, including the reading passages, is included in the download. Simply print, make copies for your students, and set up the optional video hook to kick off the mystery. The video hook is designed to spark curiosity and prompt students to think, "What’s going on?"—encouraging them to dive into the reading.

Implementation Suggestions

  • Classroom Reading: Depending on your students’ reading levels, you can read the passages together as a class and then work on the activities to fill in the missing letters and unlock clues.
  • Independent Work: For independent work, set a timer for reading and allow students time to answer questions and revisit the text as needed.
  • Struggling Readers: If students attempt the activity without reading, encourage them to highlight evidence in the text to show where they found their answers.
  • Advanced Readers: If this activity feels too easy, consider the Private Eye CSI - Literacy Mysteries series, which offers more challenging inference-based mysteries.

How Long Will It Take?
The time required depends on your students’ age and reading level. To keep the class on the same page, consider pacing the clues individually.
