Description

This fun, minimal-prep project, will give your students a chance to show their amazing creativity when learning about ecosystems by building one inside a box!

Students will work in partnerships or groups to research various aspects of an ecosystem including:

1. Plant and animal life

2. Producers, consumers, and decomposers

3. A food chain

4. A type of major event that could impact their ecosystem and the changes that would occur as a result.

Once they have completed their research, they will use this information to create a realistic ecosystem in a box and prepare to teach the class about their ecosystem.

This download includes all of the necessary student worksheets, directions/suggestions for the teacher, and a rubric to grade their projects.

I did this project with my students last year and was completely blown away by their creativity and depth of knowledge when it came time to present their projects.

Thank you so much for looking and please let me know if you have any questions.

Great resource for 4th grade Ecosystems- thorough enough to entail each substandard. I had my digital students complete parts of the project as we went through the unit to use as a summative assessment.

NGSS5-LS2-1
Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment. Emphasis is on the idea that matter that is not food (air, water, decomposed materials in soil) is changed by plants into matter that is food. Examples of systems could include organisms, ecosystems, and the Earth. Assessment does not include molecular explanations.
