These r-controlled vowels passages are designed to be used as a connected decodable text for consolidation of phonics knowledge of r-controlled vowels, and to support students in becoming fluent readers.
This bundle contains the following r-controlled vowels sets:
- ar (bar), a (path)
- er (her), ir (girl), ur (turn)
- air (fair), are (care)
- or (torn), aw (draw), ore (more)
- eer (peer), ear (hear)
Please note that this resource assumes an accent where:
- both 'or', 'aw' and 'ore' make the /or/ phoneme. If your accent pronounces /aw/ differently, just don't highlight these words as making the /or/ phoneme.
- both 'ar' and 'a' can make the /ar/ phoneme. E.g. dark, farm and path, fast. If your accent pronounces 'a' differently, just don't highlight these words as making the /ar/ phoneme.
Differentiated decodable passages have been developed at three entry points, with bees to identify the three different levels.
3 levels of fluency passages:
- Level 1: shorter text with r-controlled vowels words.
- Level 2: longer text with some more complex r-controlled vowels words
- Level 3: longest text with more complex r-controlled vowels words + rich vocabulary
All of the passages are editable, so that teachers can further adjust to suit the exact needs of their students, if required.
