Description

This activity is designed to reinforce the concept of pure substances using models of elements, compounds, and mixtures. Students sort 20 cards on three different sorting boards. On Sorting Board 1, cards are sorted into the categories of "Pure" or "Not Pure". On Sorting Board 2, cards are sorted into the categories "Element", "Compound", or "Mixture". On the Bonus Board, students further sort the cards they have identified as mixtures into the categories "Mixture of Elements", "Mixture of Compounds", or "Mixture of Elements & Compounds". After each sort, students are prompted to complete a few questions on a record sheet to allow students to process the information they have just explored. A key is included for the teacher or the key could be used at a self-checking station for students.

The element, compound, and mixture sorting board was a fantastic way to get my students actively involved. Sorting and categorizing helped them grasp tricky concepts by actually doing, not just listening. It sparked great conversations and made abstract ideas way more concrete. This is definitely a go-to activity for any science teacher looking for meaningful engagement!

I used this as a test prep review on one of our Flashback Fridays. It was really easy to scaffold. I added some multiple choice items aligned to the standards we were remediating and was able to get formative data while they had a hands on review.

This really helped my students to clear up a lot of misunderstandings about elements and compounds! I had them do the first board, and then showed them the answer key and talked about why each substance was pure/not pure and then repeated for element/compound. The kids were able to see and understand the some molecules can still be considered elements if they are the same type of atoms in the molecule. The one thing I will say is that some of my students mentioned they would have preferred that I printed it out in color. It works in black and white but would be much easier if it was in color!
