Description

A trail run (an interactive game where students move around the room) working with addition, subtraction, and multiplication word problems. All of the word problems are themed around Disney's Encanto and its characters. There are 9 word problems and this should be able to be completed and graded within a normal "class period."

If you have never done a trail run before, the easiest way is to print the word problems out and hang them around the room. Make sure they are scrambled. Then break your students into small groups or partners (I like 3 students per team). Have students start at any station. If they complete the trail run properly, they will end up at their starting point.

As students solve the word problem they are on, the answer they get will tell them which station to go to next. When everyone has completed the trail run you will be able to quickly grade their answer sheets by just checking the order of the stations they visited.

Also included is a modification if you need students to remain stationary.

Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison.
