Description

Give your PreCalculus and AP® Precalculus students a fun and engaging way to practice finding End Behaviors of Rational Function with these two unique learning activities.

  • First is an interactive foldable with explanations and examples of the 4 Cases of Rational Function End Behavior including Oblique Asymptotes and Asymptotes which mimic Polynomials.

  • The second part of this resource is a matching activity. Students determine the end behavior of 10 Rational Functions and match end behaviors from 16 choices. There are two versions of this activity, one with traditional notation, and the other with limit notation for those using this for AP PreCalculus Topic 1.7.

Answer key included. Please look at the Preview to make sure this resource is appropriate for your classes.

Use the structure of an expression to identify ways to rewrite it. For example, see 𝘹⁴ – 𝘺⁴ as (𝘹²)² – (𝘺²)², thus recognizing it as a difference of squares that can be factored as (𝘹² – 𝘺²)(𝘹² + 𝘺²).
Identify zeros of polynomials when suitable factorizations are available, and use the zeros to construct a rough graph of the function defined by the polynomial.
Rewrite simple rational expressions in different forms; write 𝘢(𝘹)/𝘣(𝘹) in the form 𝘲(𝘹) + 𝘳(𝘹)/𝘣(𝘹), where 𝘢(𝘹), 𝘣(𝘹), 𝘲(𝘹), and 𝘳(𝘹) are polynomials with the degree of 𝘳(𝘹) less than the degree of 𝘣(𝘹), using inspection, long division, or, for the more complicated examples, a computer algebra system.
