Description

Engage them on day one! The first day of school can be so boring with students moving from one teacher to another listening to the rules in the syllabus. The rules are important but I'd rather do this Walk About on the first day to get the students out of their seats and moving around the room. It gives me a chance to observe them as they interact with one another and me. It also allows students the opportunity to preview the course as some do not know what Forensic Science encompasses.

Here's how it works:

I use a class set of plastic crime scene markers (1-20) but you can easily use index cards with numbers written on them. I spread out the numbers and the ‘evidence’ (see download doc) on the lab benches around the room and have students visit each numbered station with their printed worksheet that lists the units of study. The students observe and discuss the evidence and then make their best guess to match the evidence with the unit of study. We discuss as a group when everyone finishes. What a great way to start off in Forensic Science!

☘️Helpful Hint☘️

For a large class, I divide the students into two groups - one will work on my First Day Forensics Trivia Word Scramble while the other group does the Walk About.

This was a fun activity for the first days of forensic science. It was a great way to start talking about the units we will be studying over the year.
