What others say

"What a great resource for my students to practice engineering design in Kindergarten! The writing activities were a bit beyond their current writing level, but I was easily able to adapt it to my students' needs. Great variety of activities, and lots of fun for my students!"

Description

Engineering Design is a Complete NGSS unit covering all three K-2-ETS1 standards and completely designed for beginner engineers! This interactive unit is engaging and fun for you and your little engineers. This product is all you need to cover all K-2-ETS1 standards! Product includes:

  • Engineering introduction - students learn who engineers are and what they do
  • Finding a solution - students are given a picture and they must identify the problem before thinking of a solution
  • Which tool is better - students are shown pictures of two objects that do the same job and decide which tool would work better and why.
  • The ladybugs have escaped! Students must draw a design of an object that will catch the escaped ladybugs without harming them!
  • Time to test! Students use two very different utensils to try to pick up as many macaronis as possible! Which one can pick up more?
  • Intro to the engineering design process. Students are introduced to a basic design process that they will follow later in the unit.
  • Three stories that will keep your students interested and engaged! All three stories end with a dilemma for your students to use the engineering design process to design and build a solution for the characters.
  • Lily's Adventure - Students will build a bridge for Lily and her friends to cross the stream.
  • Snow Day! Students will design and build a snowball launcher to see how far their snowballs can fly!
  • Milo's Day at the Park! Milo's owners sure get tired of throwing the ball to Milo. Students must design and build a ramp for the ball to roll down for Milo to fetch. See how far they can make their ball roll!
  • All three designs are suitable for K-2 students with every day, easy to get materials!
  • The unit comes with a detailed teacher guide and answer key.
  • Teaching sequence lesson plans for the entire unit.

Engineering Design unit covers the following NGSS standards -

K-2-ETS1-1.

Ask questions, make observations and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.

K-2-ETS1-2.

Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.

K-2-ETS1-3.

Analyze data from tests of two objects designed to solve the same problem to compare the strengths and weaknesses of how each performs.

My students loved this resource. It is well planned and have everything that I need. It helps my students understand what is an engineer and what does he/she does. The added story really helps the students apply engineering skills in an everyday life setting. Well done!
