Description

These free resources provide educators with a STEM-focused, low-budget, step-by-step engineering design process (EDP) example with project-based learning (PBL). The problem to solve for students is to build a prototype of a seaworthy aluminum watercraft to hold as much cargo (pennies) as possible. The STEM story is The Three Little Pigs!

The files included are:

- GRASPS Scenario for the Aluminum Watercraft Problem (12 slides)

- Vocabulary Terms and Materials List for the Aluminum Watercraft Problem (4 pages)

- Poster of the Engineering Design Cycle, 4 General Steps (1 slide, 8.5″ x 11″)

- Poster of the Engineering Design Cycle, 12 Specific Substeps (1 slide, 8.5″ x 11″)

- Engineering Design Process (EDP) Steps Explained for the Aluminum Watercraft Problem (1 page)

Check out the Engineering Design Process Example blog post at Vistathink.com for a full explanation of the Engineering Design Process.

NGSSMS-ETS1-2
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
NGSS3-5-ETS1-3
Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
NGSSMS-ETS1-4
Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
