Description

Engineering is the use of science, physics, and mathematics to solve problems. Engineers figure out how things work and find practical uses for scientific discoveries. Scientists and inventors often get the credit for innovations, but it is engineers who help to make those innovations available to the world.

This project is designed to engage students in a fun engineering project while learning the process of engineering design and is based on

This product includes a Lesson Plan for the Straw Tower. All of the resources (lesson plan, rubric/checklist handout, design brief handout, and unplugged research handout, for the Straw Tower) are designed to give teachers and students all the information they need to complete the project and to minimize mistakes.

All of the products are currently aligned with ITEEA Third Edition Standards for Technological Literacy. New revised ITEEA standards are coming soon.

NGSSMS-ETS1-2
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
NGSSMS-ETS1-4
Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
NGSSMS-ETS1-1
Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
