What’s Inside?

Interactive Virtual Lab PowerPoint

  • Click-through slides guiding students through enzyme function and investigation setup
  • Self-paced, student-led exploration with real-world enzyme activity simulations

Background Knowledge & Concept Review

  • What are enzymes? Explanation of active sites, substrates, and enzyme specificity
  • How do enzymes work? Includes chemical reactions, reactants vs. products, and real-life examples

pH Investigation ‍

  • Students test six different pH levels (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11) to observe enzyme function
  • Interactive data collection & glucose/galactose product counting
  • Guided analysis: What is the optimal pH for lactase?

Temperature Investigation

  • Students test six different temperatures (10°C, 15°C, 25°C, 37°C, 40°C, 60°C)
  • Measure how temperature affects lactase activity
  • Guided analysis: How does temperature influence enzyme efficiency and denaturation?

Data Collection & Analysis Tables

  • Students record enzyme activity at different conditions
  • Critical thinking prompts:
    • What happens to enzyme activity as pH/temperature increases?
    • Why do enzymes function best at 37°C (body temperature)?
    • How do fevers affect enzyme function?

Post-Lab Analysis & Discussion Questions

  • Identify independent & dependent variables
  • Predict enzyme behavior in real-world scenarios
  • Discuss why homeostasis is essential for proper enzyme function

Why You’ll Love This Product

Highly Interactive & Engaging – Students actively conduct virtual experiments rather than just reading about enzymes
No Prep & Distance Learning FriendlyFully digital & self-paced for remote, hybrid, or in-person instruction
Critical Thinking & Scientific Inquiry – Encourages data-driven conclusions & real-world applications
Real-Life Connections – Links enzyme function to lactose intolerance, digestion, and medical conditions
NGSS & STEM Aligned – Supports Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for biochemistry, metabolism, and enzyme function

Make biochemistry exciting and accessible! This Enzyme Virtual Lab ensures students master enzyme activity through hands-on, inquiry-based exploration.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
NGSSMS-LS1-2
Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways the parts of cells contribute to the function. Emphasis is on the cell functioning as a whole system and the primary role of identified parts of the cell, specifically the nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria, cell membrane, and cell wall. Assessment of organelle structure/function relationships is limited to the cell wall and cell membrane. Assessment of the function of the other organelles is limited to their relationship to the whole cell. Assessment does not include the biochemical function of cells or cell parts.
NGSSHS-LS1-1
Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins, which carry out the essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells. Assessment does not include identification of specific cell or tissue types, whole body systems, specific protein structures and functions, or the biochemistry of protein synthesis.
