Description

This is an interactive Google Slides activity for students to understand how to represent an equation using a hanger diagram. Students use tile pieces to create diagrams given an equation and write an equation given a hanger diagram. I use this activity to support the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum. Included are student slides, answer key, and extra editable templates (so you can create more problems if you want).

I used this when I introduced my seventh graders to hanger diagrams. We are in a blended learning environment and they worked on this assignment during our virtual instruction time. It was really easy for my students to create hanger diagrams on the slides, which I appreciated. They completed it fairly quickly and it fulfilled my need for a virtual assignment that demonstrated my students' understanding of hanger diagrams.

Understand solving an equation or inequality as a process of answering a question: which values from a specified set, if any, make the equation or inequality true? Use substitution to determine whether a given number in a specified set makes an equation or inequality true.
Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem; understand that a variable can represent an unknown number, or, depending on the purpose at hand, any number in a specified set.
