Estimating Population Size Lab - Distance Learning

"This was a great activity that supported my online students' understanding of a sometimes complex topic. Thank you!"

Description

In this virtual lab, students will go to a simulated pond filled with tadpoles in order to perform two different methods for estimating population size: sampling and the mark-recapture method.

The website does not require flash and the data points and questions are clearly numbered so students can easily answer in a virtual environment.

Note: This website automatically generates different numbers each time, so students should have different data and therefore, answers may vary.

I have done activities very similar to this one in the past and it was nice to have a new twist on something. It was directly related to our content so student learning was reinforced seamlessly.

Perfect for my distance students to use while we completed the in person lab. I easily adapted it to fit my Oceanography class. So much time saved! Thank you!

This helped to work through the process of estimating populations in a new way that included all my students without needing major changes to adapt to the distance learning platform.

This was just wonderful. I had no idea how I was going to be able to do this lab without them being in school. Thank you so much for this!!
