Students determine the two integers that the square root lies between, place a point on the number line to estimate the square root, and round the square root to the nearest tenth. A self-checking google sheet and a worksheet PDF version are included. This activity has 12 questions and includes positive square roots up to 225.

DIGITAL + PRINTABLE VERSIONS

There is a google sheets version and a worksheet version with the same questions included. You can have all your students do the same version, give them a choice, or have them show their work for the digital activity on the printable worksheet!

     ● Google Sheets Answer Key

     ● Printable PDF with Worksheet Version (2 pages) and Answer Key

VERSION 1: Self-Checking Google Sheet (SEE PREVIEW!)

On the google sheet version, students first put the two integers that the square root lies between in boxes that represent the ends of the number line. These boxes will turn red or green depending on if students get these numbers correct or not. In the next box, students round the square root to the nearest tenth. This box will again turn red or green depending on if the number is correct. Lastly, students drag a point to the number line to represent the location of the square root. See the preview for a short video of how the google sheet works!

VERSION 2: Worksheet PDF

The worksheet includes the same 12 square roots & questions asked! The students determine the two integers that the square roots lie between, placing the number on a number line, and rounding to the nearest tenth.

I hope that by providing multiple options, you are able to best fit the needs of your students!

Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π²). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
