About each product in this bundle:
Ethos Pathos Logos Worksheet: Reasons You Should Buy a Hairless Sphynx:
This fun ethos pathos logos activity is intended to strengthen each student’s ability to differentiate between ethos, pathos, and logos as well as have students practice articulating how they know each appeal is an appeal to ethos pathos or logos.
During this ethos pathos logos activity, students review 10 statements that appeal to ethos, pathos, or logos. After students read each statement, they determine the appeal, then they write a rationale to demonstrate their understanding. The 10 statements are silly and revolve around the argument of a teenager convincing their parents to buy them a hairless cat. Students find this subject very amusing and it keeps them engaged in this ethos pathos logos worksheet during the entire class period. :)
I taught this lesson to my 10th-grade students and they enjoyed it because talking about hairless cats is not your typical classroom conversation. ;) Plus, I have found this lesson to be very supportive of my students’ learning of ethos pathos logos because writing the rationale for each appeal provides students the opportunity to fully process their understanding of Aristotle’s appeals in a deeper way.
This product includes a digital version of the assignment compatible with Google Classroom, a printable version, as well as a detailed answer key.
Ethos Pathos Logos Worksheet: Reasons You Should Buy A Pair of Crocs:
This ethos pathos logos worksheet includes 18 practice statements that contain appeals to ethos, pathos, or logos. The statements revolve around the subject of buying a pair of Crocs because what better way to get students engaged than to connect their learning to those silly shoes they wear on their feet every day? ;)
I recently tried this ethos pathos logos activity out on my students, and they were definitely engaged! This worksheet makes ethos pathos logos fun because it gets students to connect to their learning: Each prompt is relatable to students' lives and humorous so that students stay invested in the activity. An option for this ethos pathos logos activity is to have students work with a partner to complete the assignment. This is doable by having one student share the Google Document assignment with their partner and then both students divide the work up on one document. This way, each student is responsible for 9 of the practice statements. While working on the document together, students can support each other by checking in with their partner to make sure they are determining each appeal accurately.
This lesson has two parts: first students read the statement and determine the appeal. Afterward, they write a rationale to demonstrate their understanding of the appeal. There are a total of 18 ethos pathos or logos appeal statements and 18 rationales for students to write. I have found this lesson to be very supportive of my students’ learning ethos pathos logos because writing the rationale provides them the opportunity to process their understanding in a deeper way since they have to fully explain with evidence from the statement, why that statement is ethos pathos or logos. This is the perfect ethos pathos logos worksheet for teachers who want their students to get a lot of ethos pathos logos practice so that they become masters at identifying each appeal.
This product includes a digital version of the assignment compatible with Google Classroom, a printable version, as well as a detailed answer key.
Ethos Pathos Logos Worksheets: 4 Highlighter Practice Activities
During these 4 ethos pathos logos activities, students closely review four humorous letters written from the perspective of a student to their teacher. In each letter, the student attempts to convince their teacher to stop assigning homework. As your students read each letter, they will highlight appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos in a particular color. I like to assign two of these ethos pathos logos worksheets per day to complete. Students analyze the first two letters during one class period and the second two letters during the next class period. These 4 ethos pathos logos worksheet activities follow the same format to ensure your students gain a strong understanding of ethos pathos logos and demonstrate mastery of each appeal once they have completed all four activities.
These 4 ethos pathos logos activities have several activities to deepen students' understanding of ethos pathos logos: After highlighting each letter, students then analyze the effectiveness of each argument by completing a series of analytical questions that ask students to engage with the author's use of ethos pathos logos in a more meaningful way. For instance, students are asked to determine the tone of each passage, support their responses using textual evidence, explore the effectiveness of each of the arguments, describe how the argument can be improved, and more! Every ethos pathos logos activity included is designed to not only help students identify ethos pathos logos but also practice critical thinking to ensure they demonstrate mastery of ethos, pathos and logos.
After completing each of the four highlighting ethos pathos logos worksheets, students then write a paragraph where they compare the strategies used in each of the four letters. Students determine the most effective argument and back their claims with evidence from each of the texts. This final assignment allows students to synthesize their understanding of ethos pathos logos and demonstrate their learning. This activity can be used as the final assessment for your ethos pathos logos unit or as a formative assessment for the week.
Each of these 4 ethos pathos logos worksheets were made on Google Docs. and are compatible with Google Classroom to be completed digitally. If you would prefer your students complete this activity by hand, there is a printable version included as well.
