This engaging simulation lesson on the European Union allows your students to review candidates for EU membership and decide which should be the next countries to join the EU.

The download includes everything you need for an amazing, interactive lesson that will surely engage your students and allow them to better understand the benefits of the EU and how it works.

Included in the download are:

  • A 2-page reading overview on the European Union
  • Google Slides overview and intro
  • 9 factsheets on candidate countries (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey. and Ukraine)
  • Graphic organizer
  • Analysis and reflection worksheet
  • Lesson plan with links to videos and resources for extension

After using the reading or Google Slides option to learn about how the EU works, students work together in groups to decide which countries should be allowed in next. The factsheets include info on each candidate's Democratic Institutions, Respect for Human Rights, Rule of Law, and Economy. Students use this info to make their decisions. They then reflect on their choices and explain which factors most influenced their decisions.

Answer keys and editable Google Doc options of everything are included!
