Description

This resource, for Algebra through Pre-Calculus, covers evaluating functions with expressions, simplifying polynomials, and difference quotient. The 10 practice problems are scaffolded by starting with evaluating f(4x-2) and ending with evaluating a difference quotient, an important skill in Calculus. The solution key is included in this 4 page PDF resource.

This practice includes:

  • g(x+4)
  • f(x+h)
  • Difference Quotient: (f(x+h)-f(x))/h
  • Linear functions
  • Quadratic functions

I created this resource for students when I realized they had a lot of difficulty understanding how to evaluate functions when the input was an expression instead of a numeric value. This is a great way to introduce limit definition of the derivative before teaching the topic as the practice includes multiple examples with the difference quotient.

Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If ๐˜ง is a function and ๐˜น is an element of its domain, then ๐˜ง(๐˜น) denotes the output of ๐˜ง corresponding to the input ๐˜น. The graph of ๐˜ง is the graph of the equation ๐˜บ = ๐˜ง(๐˜น).
Use function notation, evaluate functions for inputs in their domains, and interpret statements that use function notation in terms of a context.
