Share this essay with students while using the checklist. Together, identify examples of essential expository writing elements in the essay. I recommend using a different colored marker to find each item on the checklist. Students can follow along!

*bold beginning

*thesis statement

*clear topic sentences

*use of transition words, such as "and, also, too, in addition..."
