This was created for an ELA course with the theme of social justice. Students had previously read chapters 1-3 of The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander (can be found online). This assignment helps them learn basic researching skills and greatly expands their ability to explain how racism is persistent and systematic. This chart also helps prepare students for a Socratic seminar or online discussion. Students reported that this assignment helped them to make more explicit connections to racial injustice.
