Description

This engaging Desmos (digital) activity is designed to help students develop a deeper understanding of area of rectangles in a familiar context: tile flooring. The main standards addressed include: the meaning of area conceptually, how to find and measure area of rectangles, tiling rectangles to find the area, multiplying the side lengths to find area of a rectangle, and real-life situations involving area. This digital activity could be used to introduce, develop, and also solidify student understanding of area of rectangles.

The standards addressed are California Common Core 3rd Grade Math. Consider glancing at the preview to see if the questions and language are appropriate for your kiddos. This activity can definitely be used for 4th Grade Math - Geometry, or 5th Grade as a review.

In the activity, students engage in repeated reasoning by finding the area of numerous rectangles. They look for structure to derive the rule for finding the area. Rather than being told the rule, they have the opportunity to engage in the mathematics themselves. In addition, students critique the reasoning of others, apply their learning, and engage in self-reflection at the end.

Key Words: 4th Grade Geometry activity, Area of Rectangles Review Activity for 4th and 5th Grade Math, Finding the Area of Rectangles Investigation Activity, 4th Grade Geometry Math Centers Activity
