Exponential Functions from a Table of Values – Cards Activity

What’s Included?

This activity includes:

  • 48 ready-to-use cards with a table of values on one side and the rule on the other (in the back-to-back version).
  • Great for working in pairs or small groups.
  • Can also be used in a dueling form to add a competitive twist.
  • 2 versions of 36 cards to put on the wall for students to move around the room, solve the table of values, and write the corresponding rule on an answer sheet.
  • 2 versions of answer sheets for students to record their work.
  • 3 versions of the activity are described, offering various ways to engage with the content.
  • Answer keys for both teachers and students are included for easy reference.
  • An extra 2 pages are included for creating additional table of values and rules cards to expand the activity.

Objective of the Activity:

By the end of the activity, students will be able to:

  • Identify exponential functions from given tables of values.
  • Derive rules from the table of values and express them algebraically.
  • Collaborate in pairs or small groups, strengthening their understanding of exponential relationships.
  • Work independently or in teams to practice and reinforce their skills through various versions of the activity.

How to Use the Activity:

  1. Distribute the Cards: Each student or group will receive cards with a table of values on one side and the corresponding rule on the other side (back-to-back version).
  2. Work in Pairs or Groups: Students can use the cards to solve the tables of values and determine the rule. This activity works great for pairs or small groups who can discuss and share strategies.
  3. Dueling Form: Use the cards in a competitive dueling format, where students try to solve the tables faster than their opponents while deriving the correct rule.
  4. Wall Version: For the wall version, post 36 cards around the room. Students will move around, solve each table of values, and write the corresponding rule on the provided answer sheet.
  5. Answer Sheets: There are 2 versions of answer sheets for students to record their work, making the activity adaptable for different classroom settings.
  6. Review and Discuss: After the activity, go over the solutions with the class. This is a great opportunity to discuss any misunderstandings or difficulties and to reinforce key concepts related to exponential functions.

Why This Activity Works:

  • Collaborative Learning: This activity allows students to work in pairs or small groups, encouraging teamwork and problem-solving.
  • Engaging and Fun: The competitive dueling form and wall version make this activity more engaging and dynamic.
  • Multiple Versions: With 3 different versions of the activity, students can approach the material from multiple angles, which helps reinforce their learning.
  • Self-Checking: The inclusion of answer keys allows students to verify their work, encouraging independent learning.
  • Teacher-Friendly: The included answer keys make it easy for teachers to check progress and address any confusion.

Materials Needed:

  • Printed cards for each student or group (48 total)
  • Answer sheets (2 versions)
  • Answer key for teacher reference (included)
  • Posters or space on the wall for the wall version
  • Extra pages for creating more cards (included)
