Description

Exploring real-life patterns and phenomena can be fascinating. This activity will allow students time to think and discover exponential functions in a more in-depth manner. The facilitator can be creative and use this resource in other ways such as math centers, math labs or stand alone activities. The explorations included are:

1) Sierpinski Triangle - geometric patterns

2) Tower of Hanoi - gaming

3) Growing and Decaying Pennies - chance/statistics

4) Catching the flu - see how long you last without getting the flu

5) Would you rather... - writing activity

6) A battle between pi and e - let students decide which is better pi or e

Why Teachers Love This Resource:

  • Interactive & Engaging: Keeps students motivated while mastering exponential functions.
  • Flexible Usage: Ideal for math stations, small groups, or stand-alone activities.
  • Cross-Curricular Learning: Combines math with writing, gaming, and real-world problem-solving.
  • Low Prep, High Engagement: Easy to implement and guaranteed to spark curiosity!

Empower your students to discover the beauty of exponential growth and decay with activities that are fun, educational, and adaptable to any classroom.

I used the Sierpinski's Triangle station with my students to introduce exponential functions. We used the Catching the Flu to demonstrate growth and decay and Would You Rather for a better understanding of the rapid change of exponential situations.
