This shadow matching activity was created for our students in our EC/SE classroom!
In our classroom, we would cut out the bee shapes, laminate the bees and the background, and use Velcro dots to create a long-lasting shadow matching activity.
In our classroom, we would cut out the bee shapes, laminate the bees and the background, and use Velcro dots to create a long-lasting activity. Shadow matching works on visual discrimination, a skill that is fundamental to reading, writing, and mathematics. Visual discrimination is the ability to discern visual differences between two different things. This skill is important in reading to discern the difference between visually similar letters like "U" and "V" or the difference between "no" and "on". In mathematics, this can come into play when determining the difference between two similar numbers like "21" and "12".
A step up from activities that directly match images, shadow matching introduces an element of extrapolation that isn't found in other types of matching activities. Understanding the idea that two objects that aren't the same color, but have the same shape, are in the same category further supports visual discrimination and critical thinking skills.
This activity is themed after the three bee rules suggested in PBIS. The three bee rules in our classroom are: Be safe, be friendly, and be a worker. They would also be great for a bug themed pack or for students who just love bees!
