Want a ready-made lesson to teach before winter break? Want to keep students engaged when all they can think about is not being in school? Teach them about a new holiday this year with this Kwanzaa lesson!

Kwanzaa is an African American holiday that was created to celebrate our culture and African heritage. Starting on December 26th through January 1st, we celebrate one principal per day as we gather together in harmony and love. This lesson discusses each of the principals in detail, including the correct pronunciation and symbols for each day.

Every year, the last lesson I teach to students is this one about Kwanzaa. It doesn't require a test or quiz at the end, but the information, songs, videos, and surprise episode at the end make it entertaining for students, calming them down during the madness before winter break. Have a hassle-free day and teach this lesson to your students today!

Includes:

  • Kwanzaa greeting
  • History of how the holiday originated
  • A detailed description of the 7 principles
  • Videos for engagement and visual representation
  • Discussion questions
  • Kwanzaa farewell

Enjoy teaching about this wonderful African American holiday!

My students and I both learned a great deal about Kwanzaa. I greatly appreciated the fact that I could easily translate the slides into French for my students. The clipart also helped with understanding of the celebration. Merci!
