Description
This fall narrative writing activity gives middle and high school ELA students a concrete organizing principle for personal narrative writing: choosing one of the five senses and writing about an autumn memory through that lens.
Designed for grades 5–9, the complete five-day mini-unit walks students through the full writing process (brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing) with differentiated options built in at every stage.
The smell of cinnamon and burning leaves, the crunch of leaves underfoot, the taste of apple cider are mentioned as the focus. Because the focus is built in, students who struggle to organize their writing have a natural framework from the very first sentence.
This is a complete five-day mini-unit. Everything needed to run the lesson from brainstorming through publishing is included, with flexible options for differentiation at every stage.
Included in this fall narrative writing activity:
✔ Editable five-day lesson plan with teaching ideas, discussion prompts, suggested methods for each stage of the writing process, and a list of standards — flexible enough to compress or extend based on your class
✔ Writing process reference sheet covering all five stages — prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing — for students to keep as a reference
✔ Two brainstorming options — four sense-specific task cards (one per sense) for students who need structured scaffolding, and a one-page "all senses" graphic organizer for students who can work more independently; use one or both
✔ Two differentiated drafting sheets — one that walks students through all five senses to identify a focus, and one that moves directly to topic sentence development for students who are ready
✔ Six-traits revision and editing checklist covering Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions — students self-assess before submitting
✔ Fall-themed final draft forms including a cover page and lined notebook paper, plus a Google Drive digital version students can access and complete online
How teachers use this:
→ Full writing process unit spread across approximately one week; each day has a natural stopping point built into the lesson plan
→ Differentiation built in at two stages: brainstorming (task cards vs. one-pager) and drafting (structured vs. topic-sentence-focused sheet) — no extra prep needed to support different ability levels
→ Works with middle school and high school remedial classes — the sensory focus gives struggling writers a concrete organizing principle without oversimplifying the task
→ Final drafts display well on a bulletin board, in the hallway, or at a fall school program — the themed cover page makes them presentation-ready
→ Advanced students can write a second paragraph using a different sense and practice writing a transition between the two
→ Part of the Narrative Writing Bundle for Middle School — see Narrative Writing Bundle | Middle School Narrative Writing Activities for all six seasonal narratives at a discounted price
