Fall Writing for First Grade is filled with first grade writing activities with a fall season theme. Students write fall letters, complete graphic organizers, respond to literature, etc. Activities and topics include an autumn poem, scarecrow craft, pumpkins, apples, Johnny Appleseed, fall animals, and more. Use them for a writer’s workshop, at a thematic writing center, or for independent and guided writing practice.

The packet includes:

• Fall Season KWL Chart - write what they know, want to learn, and have learned as students learn about the fall season.

• Write a List! – draw pictures and write a list of fall writing ideas.

• It’s Fall! Main Idea/Details – complete a graphic organizer by writing a main idea about fall and details to support it.

• Learning About the Fall Season – write, illustrate, and share facts about the fall season.

• What can you write about a scarecrow? – draw and write about a scarecrow.

• Fall Season Web – complete a web graphic organizer with words and/or pictures that describe fall.

• Dear Fall Letter – write a letter to fall.

• A Fall Story – write and illustrate a fall story.

• How many words can you make from the letters in SCARECROW? - cut the letters out and use them to make words from the letters in “scarecrow.” Write the words in the space provided. {Extend the activity by making a class list of all the different words the students make. Students can add to it throughout the fall months.}

• Hello Fall! writing – write about fall.

• A Scarecrow Description – Finish the scarecrow. Give the scarecrow a name, face, straw hair, a hat, patches, and some buttons. Describe the scarecrow.

• Colors of Fall – complete the sentences about the colors associated with fall.

• How to Build a Scarecrow interactive writing – draw and write about the steps needed to build a scarecrow.

• Compare and Contrast fall and spring - complete the Venn diagram by drawing and labeling or writing what is the same and different about fall and spring.

• All About Autumn nouns and adjectives – write a list of nouns and adjectives that describe autumn.

• Fun Autumn Activities nouns and verbs – write a list of nouns and verbs that describe fun autumn activities.

• An Autumn {acrostic} Poem - write phrases that describe autumn and begin with each of the letters in autumn.

• I can read a fall book. – write and illustrate a favorite part of a fall book.

• Retell a Fall Story - retell a fall story by writing about and illustrating the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

• Fall Day Fun! – write about and illustrate what you do on a fun fall day.

• Fall Sports – write about sports played during the fall season.

• Season Changes – write lists of changes in the fall and summer seasons. Illustrate a change from each list.

• Things That Fall – write a list of things that fall. Color the leaves to show the changing colors of fall leaves.

• I can write fall sentences. – write a sentence for each of the given fall words.

• A Pumpkin Story - draw and label the setting, character(s), problem, and solution of a pumpkin story. Evaluate the story.

• All About Pumpkins – write facts about pumpkins in each of the pumpkins.

• Pumpkin Life Cycle Posters and booklet – write about the life cycle of a pumpkin from seed to adult pumpkin. Pumpkin Life Cycle posters are included (color and black and white versions).

• Compare and Contrast Apples and Pumpkins – draw and/or write what is the same and different about apples and pumpkins {make a great partner activity}.

• I can write about apples. – write, illustrate, and share two things that are learned from reading a book about apples.

• Writing About Apples – use the word bank to write about apples. Illustrate the writing.

• How an Apple Grows – cut and glue the pictures in order to show the sequence of the growth of an apple. Write sentences to describe the sequence.

• Johnny Appleseed Story – draw and label the setting, character(s), problem, and solution of a Johnny Appleseed story.

• Johnny Appleseed – draw and write facts about Johnny Appleseed.

• I can write about Johnny Appleseed. – write, illustrate, and share about Johnny Appleseed after reading a Johnny Appleseed book.

• Retell an Owl Story - retell an owl story by writing what happens at the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

• An Owl Story – write about and illustrate a story about an owl.

• Animals in Autumn – write a list of facts about hedgehogs and squirrels. Draw a picture to illustrate one fact from each list.

• Fall Writing Paper – fall themed writing paper to use at a writing center.

• Scarecrow Craft – scarecrow craft and can, have, are writing activity.
