Description

This is a ready-to-go unit with 20 days of lesson plans. In this writing workshop unit, students are introduced to fantasy writing through the use of mentor books you can check out from the library. Teacher modeling and peer sharing are also key components of this genre study. This unit is designed to last four to five weeks and culminates with published books.

In my classroom, writing workshop takes place Monday-Thursday for one hour each day. This hour begins with a minilesson, lasting approximately fifteen-twenty minutes. Then, students are given time to write independently or conference with a teacher or peer. Finally, the hour ends with ten minutes of whole-class sharing. My lessons are written with this format in mind.

At this point in the year, my students have worked extensively on the follow craft lessons: developing characters, slowing down main events, incorporating action, using sensory descriptions, writing meaningful dialogue, and using powerful words. You will not see lessons for those items, but they are present on the checklists. The download is in word so you can edit your expectations based on craft minilessons already taught in your room.

The free preview contains an example lesson and lists the topics of all other lessons.

Supports Common Core standards for writing and language.
