I created this project to used with my 4th grade highly-gifted class. It incorporates multiplication, division, decimals, money management, and area into a complex and engaging simulation project. Students work with a group to purchase fields and seeds to plant each "year". They then roll the dice to determine what the weather will be like that year and how it will affect their crop growth. Then, they calculate their profit by "selling" the crops that made it through the year. They purchase fields at the beginning of the simulation that are located in different places in the U.S., all with different risk factors. They must determine the area of the field in order to know how many seeds to purchase. They can then buy more fields towards the end of the simulation to make a greater profit. My students loved this and I hope yours will too! They enjoyed competing with other teams to see who could make the most money.
